This round’s 170 grain bullet has a unique soft point design. The Partition gets its name from the thick layer of jacket that splits its core into two sections. The rear half remains intact during high velocity penetration, ensuring the Partition retains the mass requisite for access to the vitals. The front half is exposed at the tip, enabling the Partition to expand substantially as it does its final trick. The Partition’s jacket controls uniform expansion thanks to its thin mouth which ruptures at the instant of impact, as well as the gradual taper that thickens it around the middle.
Federal loaded this round’s Partition to a conventional 2,200 fps muzzle velocity, so most lever-action hunters should already be familiar with its ballistic performance. Clean burning propellant and a sensitive primer pull off a steady chamber pressure, and Federal’s freshly drawn and tapered brass creates a perfect case for handloading.
