Winchester’s open tip bullet begins production as a concentric copper alloy jacket. The hollow jacket is then filled with molten lead through the aperture in its tip, which solidifies in place so it can become form-fitting. So evenly distributed a core helps the open tip retain its in-flight stability even at lower velocities!
The most important thing to appreciate about an open tip is this: Its terminal performance is more or less identical to that of a standard FMJ. In other words, that nose cavity is not designed to trigger expansion once it starts filling up with pressurized soft tissue.
The 300 Blackout is still not an extremely common cartridge, so handloaders should be pleased to learn that this ammo’s Boxer-primed brass cases make it perfect for reloading. These factory fresh cases weren’t polished after they were annealed at the factory for added strength.
